Meeting Israa at the Briant Park skating rink was yet all of a strock of luck: looking at Israa, an old friend of my friend Franck, I knew something was definitly destined to happen! Well, then, we've been to a good ethiopio-swedish (!) restaurant where we (my friends Franck, Claude, Nanie, Florence, Tanya, Caroline and Véronique) met her brother and her own friends, particularly Sarah who invited us (after the dinner) to go and see the presidential election TV show at her flat in Harlem. There, drinking wine, we watched CNN. When the Virginia results were released after 92% of the counting of votes, giving 51% to Obama, I've had the feeling that CNN was on the edge to announce the "Obama elected" projection. And they did it one minute after! We suddenly realized at 21h54 that it was done: Obama was elected. He was the 44th president of the United State of America. Incredible! I'm in heaven ! We congratulated ourselves, shouting, laughing and wondering if it was real!
Then, we went on Adam Clayton Street where a big crowd was watching the results on a huge screen. Black people, white people, immigrants and visitors from all over the world were there, realizing that the moment was exceptional, unique, remarkable. The crowd was pleased, enjoying. They shouted when Barack Obama finally appeared on the screen with his smile so warm and his breathless charm. But everybody was concentrated some minutes after. Listening religiously each word of this new president. It's a day. It's a chance. But look, was saying Obama, I'll do it with you and nothing will be done without you. I need you. As sings Ella Fitzgerald, "You got to have a dream, If you don't have a dream, How you gonna have a dream come true?" So, it'll take courage and determination. A sort of a war against our slothfulness.
I was submerged by his message, wiping away two tears, realizing how we are, all full of hope. I looked at my neighbours, they were focused, linked to Obama's speech.
November the 4th was a red-letter day, a date we'll never forget, whatever will occure. And coming back to Montreal, I've changed one of my password for 08-11-04! Good luck fellow Americans. I'm very proud of the American society who decided itself to give peace and justice a chance. You needed this guy. Now, he needs you. Let's do it! Eric
